CONSERVATION: FedEx and the Global Environment Centre got together to plant 300 mangrove saplings in Kuala Gula

KUALA LUMPUR: COURIER company FedEx Express (FedEx) partnered with the Global Environment Centre (GEC)  to plant 300 mangrove saplings in Kuala Gula, Perak recently.

Some 71 FedEx volunteers from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Ipoh got together to complete this project. Mangrove swamps are essential to the eco-system which helps protect coastal areas from erosion and storm surges.

However, over the years, a large section of this indigenous swamp has eroded due to the abandoned development projects in the area.

The efforts of the FedEx volunteers will help revive the mangrove swamp which is a haven for about 200 migratory bird species, and is relied upon by the the local fishing community as their only means of generating income.

FedEx Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Ramesh Kumar Singam said he was thrilled to see his team members swapping their laptops and smart phones for boots and spades.

"I am happy to see our team members eagerly offer to swap their laptops and smart phones for boots and spades, all to support this year's FedEx Cares Week. I am also inspired to see FedEx's dedication towards sustainability which connects people and places through the spirit of volunteerism.

"FedEx Cares Week is just one of the many ways in which FedEx supports the local community.

"I am proud to be part of the FedEx culture which encourages a sense of caring as we help to build a strong local community," said Ramesh.

Across the Asia-Pacific region, more than 1,000 FedEx volunteers are expected to support local organisations in 36 activities, donate their time and talents to serve their local communities and improve the quality of life for people in need.

FedEx Malaysia volunteers took the opportunity to make it a double celebration by also commemorating Malaysia Day.
