MANGROVE swamps are essential for the eco-system as they help protect coastal areas from erosion.

However, over the years, a large section of this indigenous swamp has been severely marred due to abandoned development projects in the area.

FedEx Express recently teamed up with the Global Environment Centre to organise a rehabilitation activity at the Kuala Gula Mangrove Swamp in Kerian, Perak.

A total of 71 FedEx volunteers from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Ipoh planted 300 mangrove seedlings along Teluk Rubiah to help rehabilitate the mangrove swamp in Kuala Gula.

The efforts aimed at helping revive the mangrove swamp, which attracts about 200 migratory bird species, is heavily relied upon by the local fishing community as their only means of generating income to support their families.

“I am thrilled to see our team members putting away their laptops and smartphones for boots and spades; all to support this year’s FedEx Cares Week,” said FedEx Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Ramesh Kumar Singam.

“I am also inspired to see the dedication towards sustainability, which connects people and places through the spirit of volunteerism.

“FedEx Cares Week is just one of the many ways in which the company supports the local communities.

“I am proud to be part of this culture that encourages a sense of caring as we help to build strong local communities.”

Across the Asia-Pacific region, more than 1,000 FedEx volunteers are expected to support local organisations in 36 activities, donate their time and talents to serve their local communities and improve the quality of life of people in need.

FedEx Malaysia volunteers took the opportunity to make it a double celebration by also commemorating Malaysia Day.
