The DANIDA SMART Ranger Project

About the Project
SMART Rangers is an environmental education program which has been designed for school communities to learn about the environment, particularly focusing on natural and non natural resource management. It initially began with a focus on solid waste management and rivers, and was later developed into a full fledged program by itself.

GEC saw the potential of proper solid waste management education for school children, and proceeded to tailor a program that would train and educate students to manage and reduce the waste that is produced by them.

This comprehensive program is a way to create awareness on the importance of recycling and reusing their waste, and further empower them to take action on their own. The basis of this program follows the concept of “Civic Science”, and the 4R 2C Concept (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost and Close the loop). Global Environment Centre is the first organization in Malaysia to use this approach.

Civic Science is the process of bringing thoughts and issues from one’s mind into the heart. This is done by a simple method of enhancing awareness, providing the knowledge, and most importantly, the skills required to take action proactively on environmental matters.

About DANIDA
The Government of Malaysia in 2005 endorsed the National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management (NSP) and enacted the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act (SWMPC Act) in August 2007.
