Community-based Waste Management in Pulau Pangkor

This three year project that began in 2015 focused on empowering local community to reduce coastal water pollution by managing waste and water sustainably via Waste to Wealth concept. The project introduces 4R2C formula (rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle, compost and close the loop) – a holistic approach developed by GEC to minimise waste generation and create income generation options.

Summary of Project Achievements:

Contribution made by Vale Minerals Malaysia has enable us to create environmental stewardship community that conducts river water monitoring regularly and implementing best management practices such as recycling and composting to reduce waste generation. The project has also inspired the local community to initiate a number of creative upcycling projects and allow GEC to build their capacity in financial and marketing literacy to help to improve their source income.
