ONE of the best ways to inculcate a good habit in a young boy or girl is to teach them how to do it in a fun way.

On Sept 26, non-governmental organisation Global Environment Centre (GEC), the teachers and parent-teacher association of SK Sri Kelana in Petaling Jaya did just that by launching a recycling campaign and holding environmental project awards for the pupils at the primary school itself. To add to the fun atmosphere, plenty of stalls were set up to sell anything from books to toys.

Volunteers from Friends of Kelana Jaya Park were there to show the pupils and their parents how and what to recycle and how it would help the environment. While some of the pupils were browsing through the stalls, another more active group was in the field playing games organised by GEC.

GEC also launched its Start Managing All Resources Today (SMART) Rangers project at the school and the latter was known to be active in environmental projects.

The SMART Rangers project would be extended to other schools later. Petaling Jaya’s Local Agenda 21’s committee chairman for the environment Datuk Dr Wong Sai Hou officiated the event. Also present were SK Sri Kelana principal Loh Shin Fong, the school’s parent-teacher association chairman Hamdan Humandi, Petaling district department of education representative Irwan Tan and GEC director Faizal Parrish.
