Studies on our world’s climate change revealed that the heightened variations in the world’s climate are caused by greenhouse gases (GHG). GHG contains mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). A key contributor to the rising temperature in the world’s weather is caused by the massive amount of GHG released into the atmosphere by fossil fuel and industrial burning.

By capturing and storing enormous amount of atmospheric CO2, peatlands have an increasing cooling effect on our world – where they formed coal, lignite and other fossil fuels. On the other hand, when peatlands are disturbed, degraded or burnt, they become a significant source of CO2 in our atmosphere. The Raja Musa peat forest rehabilitation via community based tree planting activities plays an important step in reducing the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere.
The upcoming tree planting on 21 March 2009 in conjunction with World Forestry Day will be the culmination of a series of tree planting activities that commenced on 13 December 2008 with the planting of 1,500 Mahang seedlings over 2.5 hectares and the 4,500 seedlings planted on 21 February 2008 over an area of 16 hectares.
With the collaboration of Selangor Department of Forestry, Global Environment Centre (GEC), and CIMB Islamic EcoSave – 10,000 seedlings will be planted on 21 March 2009. This continuing effort by partners of a public agency, corporate body, NGOs and the community shall further amplify the momentum for greater efforts and aspire others to join. How to get to Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest by road from Kuala Lumpur :
- From Klang Valley, take the North-South Plus Highway towards Ipoh.
- Then, take Exit 119 (Bukit Tagar, Batang Berjuntai) and pay toll.
- After the toll plaza, travel straightwards on (7 km) until you reach a T junction and TURN LEFT.
- Drive on for another 3 km and you will reach the entrance to the planting site.
Signages will be put to guide participants to the site. The PJ A&W Restaurant (section 52, near AmCorp Mall) will be the common meeting point for those who wish to carpool or take the bus. Departure time from A&W is at 7.30 am sharp. Please be at A&W by 7.15am!
