  Community Flood-Proofing and Adaptation for Climate Resilience, Kuantan, Pahang

As the result of successful Community Flood Preparedness Workshop carried out in Klang, Selangor in 2015,  GEC in partnership with UPM, MyWP, DID Pahang and Kuantan organised another flood preparedness workshop at Perkampungan Sungai Isap, Kuantan located at east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The flood preparedness training programme was targeted to communities that were affected by flood incident in 2014. The project focused on Flood ‘Town-watching’ training, water filter demonstration and grab bag preparation hands-on trainings.

Target groups:

Community based Organisation (Residential Association, Rukun Tetangga, JKKK) - Kampung Belukar, Kampung Tiram, Kampung setongkol, Kampung Seri Damai, Kampung Pahang, Kampung Sg Isap, Kampung Padang, Kampung Gudang Rasau, Kampung Ubai, Kampung Sg Rimau, Kampung Panchang, Kampung Jaya Gading, Kampung Semangat, Kampung Hijrah, Kampung Pandan 2, Kampung Jeram Takar, Kampung Melayu, Sg Lembing, Kampung Kuala Kenau, Kampung Cheroh Paloh, and Kampung Tanah Putih.

Aim/objective:

The main objective of the project was to enhance and develop a Malaysian Facilitation and training module for community flood awareness and preparedness, incorporating experiential learning styles, to enhance climate change resilience.

Project Achievement:

  • The workshop was conducted to equip the community with knowledge and skills on flood-proofing and climate resilience
  • Communities were exposed to identification of safe escape routes and demonstrations on the preparation of emergency bags were given.
  •  Demonstration on the use of water treatment apparatus to obtain safe drinking water was also provided to the community.
  • All participants were also exposed on developing their own community flood hazard map to enable the identification of safe routes which will be helpful in times of danger and emergency.
