  Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation for Village Protection and Sustainable Community Livelihood

Began in December 2011, the project aimed at rehabilitating degraded mangrove belt along Bernam River through ecological mangrove rehabilitation (EMR) approach. Eight hectare of the degraded area was rehabilitated with local community participation to recover the degraded mangrove to its nearest original condition and to prevent intrusion of river water into the village.

Aims/objectives:

  • Rehabilitate and improve the condition of the degraded mangrove belt along Bernam River by using the Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation (EMR) approach;
  • Promote cost-effective mangrove rehabilitation through community based mangrove action project and enhance the biodiversity of the riverine ecosystem along Sg. Bernam;
  • Establish a demonstration site of Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation to promote an effective mangrove rehabilitation strategy in Peninsular Malaysia; and
  • To support the national level mangrove rehabilitation programme for coastal protection.

Project Acheivements:

  • A total of eight (8) hectares of degraded mangrove areas were succesfully replanted with 5,300 native species of Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera parvifolia and Avicennia alba by 846 volunteers.
  • The project was acknowledged as a national level mangrove rehabilitation programme for coastal protection by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia. This permits GEC to use the National Mangrove Planting logo known as Treasure the Mangrove in any of the project publication and awareness material in near future.
  • The undertaken project activities were recognized as implementation strategies for Integrated Coastal Management of Sabak Bernam by Selangor Waters Management Authorities (SWMA).
  • Initiated a smart partnership and strengthen the network between the government agencies and local communities via establishing community and district level committee.
  • The project has successfully engages the communities and stakeholders in understanding the social, economic and ecological requirements of mangroves sustainability.
