A few words from a GEC volunteer

My name is Roger Huang from Taiwan.

I volunteered with Global Environment Centre (GEC) for peatland conservation in the winter of 2013. I’m really glad that GEC is in cooperation with AIESEC, as it gave me the chance to work with a bunch of great people at GEC.

It was late on a Friday night when we arrived in Malaysia. GEC officer Hyrul drove quite a distance to transport the three of us all the way from Sungai Buloh to the office in Bestari Jaya, a town near Kuala Selangor; before returning home to Shah Alam. His commitment to work impressed me that very first night.

The next day, Mr Raj, the GEC senior officer in charge of volunteers, gave a detailed explanation of GEC and peatland conservation, showing us the peatland areas.

On February 23rd, a tree planting event was held in conjunction with the World Wetlands Day 2013. There was also canal blocking and the launch of the ‘No Peat Fire, No Haze’ campaign.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling well, so I missed that event. I wish I could have helped!

It was an unforgettable experience to work at GEC. They are a group of people working hard to protect the earth and all human beings.
