Kelana Jaya Lakes Rehabilitation Programme

The Kelana Jaya Lakes Rehabilitation Programme was developed in 2002 by Global Environment Centre (GEC) with funding from the UNDP-GEF Small Grant Fund.  The goal of the project was "to rehabilitate and sustainably manage the lakes of Kelana Jaya Municipal Park through participatory approach involving all key stakeholders especially the community groups". 

The objectives were to:

  1. Promote rehabilitation of Kelana Jaya Lakes and its biodiversity.
  2. Enhance involvement of local communities in lake management and monitoring.
  3. Build capacity of government, agencies, NGOs, communities in Biological approach to river / lake management.
  4. Promote smart partnership between all stakeholders.

Over the 2-year project period, a number of activities were carried out:

  1. Creation and establishment of Friends of Kelana Jaya Park in October 2002.
  2. Installation of aerators in the lakes.
  3. Raise awareness about pollution sources and problems to the community.
  4. Alien fishing competitions and re-introduction of native species.
  5. Regular activities organized by the Friends for the surrounding community.
